    1 Sharp  (adjective) means having a thin edge or point that cuts things easily. "Sharp" can also mean intelligent and quick to understand things. Other forms include "sharpen" (verb) and "sharpness" (noun).

    Isabelle's very sharp and has a lot of good ideas.

    It's easy to cut vegetables with a sharp knife.

    Anna is sharp, so she understands things easily.

     

    2 Initiative  An "initiative" (noun) is a plan of action or a plan to solve a particular problem.

    Isabelle has several ideas for new initiatives.

    We discussed a new initiative for raising money.

     

    3 Frustrated  (adjective) means impatient and annoyed because you have no control over a situation and cannot accomplish what you want to. Other forms include "frustrate" (verb), "frustration" (noun), and "frustrating" (adjective).

    Isabelle is frustrated that Bernard has given her very little support.

    Anne felt frustrated when she couldn't reach William on the phone.

     

    4 Resist  (verb) means to fight against someone or something. It can also mean to refuse to accept an idea, suggestion, or plan. "Resist" can be used with or without an object. Other forms include "resistant" (adjective) and "resistance" (noun).

    The man resisted the dog's attack.

    At first I resisted his proposal, but when I realized it would save money.

     

    5 Head  (verb) means to lead an organization or group of people. "Head" is used with an object. Another form is "head" (noun).

    Simone Buttet heads Research and Development.

    I was asked to head the project after my manager stepped down.

     

    6 Be in charge  (verb phrase) means to be responsible for and in control of a situation or group of people. "Be in charge" can be followed by "of" plus an object, or it can be used alone if the meaning is clear.

    Jean is in charge of marketing.

    While our manager is on vacation, I'll be in charge.

     

    7 Vision  (noun) is the ability to see. It is an uncountable noun. A "vision" can also be a mental picture of a possible situation. In this case, it is a countable noun. Another form is "envision" (verb).

    Belle Vie'w senior management has a real vision for how the company might improve sales.

    I have to wear glasses because I have bad vision.

    In my vision of this company's future, I see line of affordable cars for young people.

     

    8 Get approval (verb phrase) means to receive official permission. A possessive noun or pronoun can come between "get" and "approval."

    I think we need to get Bernard's approval to diversify the product line.

    I won't make any changes until get approval from the board.

     

    9 Scope  (noun) is the maximum limit of what is allowed or acceptable. It is often used with "beyond" or "within." "Scope" is an uncountable noun.

    I'm hoping Bernard will allow us to expand the scope of our work.

    Developing a clothing line is really beyond the scope of our company.

    Creating a new men's fragrance is definitely within our scope.

     

    10 Explore  (verb) means to examine an area carefully to find out more about it. "Explore" can also mean to examine or discuss an idea, plan, or suggestion carefully to find out more about it. "Explore" can be used with or without an object. Another form is "exploration" (noun).

    We should explore how Belle Vie might change its product line.

    I like to explore cities that I've never visited before.

    We explored several possibilities for improving sales.

     

    11 Position  (verb) means to put something in a certain place or situation. "Position" can also mean to design a product to appeal to a particular consumer group. "Position" is used with an object. Other forms are "position" (noun) and "positioning" (noun).

    Belle Vie wants to position some new products for a younger audience.

    Let's position the chairs so that they face each other.

    We should position our brand toys for the Asian market.

     

    12 Persuade  (verb) means to use argument or discussion to convince someone to do or think something. "Persuade" is used with an object. Other forms include "persuasion" (noun) and "persuasive" (adjective).

    We need to persuade Bernard to support our research efforts.

    Alec's detailed presentation persuaded me to accept his proposal.
