Iraq violence: IS bombing kills 125 Ramadan shoppers in Baghdad

At least 125 people have been killed and many more injured in an explosion claimed by the Islamic State group in Baghdad, Iraqi police say.

    1. Iraq's Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi was met by angry crowds while visiting the scene of the blast on Sunday.

       blast 【blɑ:st】 爆炸

    2. The destruction and death at the site of the bombing adds up to a clear message from the jihadists of so-called Islamic State. They are saying that, even if they are defeated on the battlefield, they can still hit back where it really hurts - killing civilians in the centre of the Iraqi capital, and other capital cities, too.

       destruction 【dɪˈstrʌkʃn】 摧毁,破坏

    3. Authorities say the city was used as a launch pad for attacks on Baghdad.

       pad 【pæd】 垫,衬垫,发射台

    4. Hackers broke into the interior ministry website and placed a gruesome picture of a dead child and a drawing of a fake bomb detector, one of the useless devices still in use in Baghdad at checkpoints, he adds.

       interior 【ɪnˈtɪəriə】 内部

       fake 【feɪk】 伪造,假装

       detector 【dɪˈtɛktɚ】 探测器

    2. "But we don't know what we're going to. If what happens as we develop this negotiation with the rest of Europe, it does become clear - and let's suppose for example we find we're shut out of the single market, we have to rely on the World Trade Organisation as the route back in to different trade deals....

       shut 【ʃʌt】 关闭

if someone is shut out of something, they are not allowed to do it or be involved in it.

       rely 【rɪˈlaɪ】 依靠

    3. There has been much talk of a second referendum and an online petition calling for one has been signed by more than four million people, though thousands of signatures were removed after it was hijacked by hackers.

       signature 【ˈsɪgnətʃə】 签署,署名

    4. Work and pensions secretary Stephen Crabb, who campaigned for Remain, said the referendum was a "clear instruction to government" and there could be "no attempt to sidestep it".

       sidestep 【ˈsaɪdstep】 回避,绕开

    5. He said the government should engage now with other European Union countries to see what room there was for manoeuvre, stressing the continuing importance of David Cameron's role in this, rather than waiting for the outcome of the Tory leadership race.

       engage 【ɪnˈgeɪdʒ】

    1. to be doing or to become involved in an activity
    2. to attract someone's attention and keep them interested
