1. to cause something to not be effective
   - the fact that she lied about her work experience negated the contract.
   - efforts to expand the tourist industry could be negated by reports that the sea is highly polluted.

　　　impose　【ɪmˈpoʊz】　

1. to cause something, such as a tax, fine, rule, or punishment to affect someone or something by using your authority
   - the judge imposed a life sentence.
   - a curfew has been imposed upon the city's youth.
   - i needed to break free from the limits imposed by my own fear of failure.
2. to force someone to accept something or yourself
   - he imposed his will on his subjects.
   - i don't like having to impose myself on other people.
3. to expect or ask someone to do something for you when this is not convenient for them(often + on or upon)
   - we could ask to stay the night, but i don't want to impose on them.
   - you shouldn't impose on your friend's good nature.
