There is/There are称为There be句型，也称为存在句型，表示事物的客观存在，There在此结构中是引导词，已经没有副词"那里"的含义

例句：There is a ruler,two pens and five books in the school bag.

There be 句型的难点在于谓语动词的选择上，到底是用单数还是复数应该取决于哪一个主语。在There be句型中，谓语动词的选择采用就近一致的原则，即谓语动词的人称和数常常与最靠近的做主语的词语保持一致，所以说在上述例句中，则应该与一个桌子的数保持一致，所以谓语动词选择is，用There is来翻译此句。
