Success in Life

When you talk about success, what can you say?

Success means different things for different people.

Some may equate it with fame, some with wealth and still some with accomplishments.

• equate it with (把...等同于), regard ... as ... (把...当作...)

• fame 名 - famous 有名的

• 英文中习惯: 代词、换词、省略

• sense of accomplishments 成就感

For me, it means fulfilling one's dreams. Whatever your dreams are, you have a goal there and then focus all your attention on it.

• 实现梦想 realize, achieve, make ... come true, attain one's goal
• I had a fulfilling summer vacation. 充实的
• focus all your attention on it 全力以赴 (连读), spare no effort to do / in doing

Dreams bring you hope and happiness. In the process of struggling for it, you cry, sweat, complain or even curse, but the joy of harvesting makes you forget all the pains and troubles you have gone through.

• What brings you here? 什么风把你吹来的
• sweat 流汗 curse 咒骂
• no sweat = a piece of cake 小菜一碟
• go/be through = undergo 经历 (you have no idea what he has been through)
• we have been through thick and thin. 同甘苦共患难

So an old proverb says that the sweetest fruit is one that has undergone the bitterest ordeal.

• sour, sweet, bitter, spicy/hot, salty 酸甜苦辣咸
• ordeal, hardship 艰难历程，痛苦经历
• 'Love me, love my dog' 爱屋及乌
• 'Kill two birds with one stone' 一石二鸟，一箭双雕
• 'An eye for an eye' 以牙还牙

There are several keys to success. First, your goal must be practical and practicable. If you set your goal too high, chances are that you will never attain it

• When you set up a goal, you have to follow the rule of 'smart' - specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, time-bound (时效性).
• mission impossible 不可能的任务
• feasible (可行的) practicable (可实行的) workable (切实可行的)
• work / come off 可行，奏效
• it's possible that = chances are that

Next, you have to make a plan of doing it. You can take some steps to realize it. Since the process is quite tough, you need to be diligent, patient and persevering.

• persevere/ perseverance 持久/毅力

Even if you meet with some difficulties or frustrations, just take them in your stride. You can always tell yourself that there is nothing insurmountable.

• frustrated 令人沮丧的
• take sth. in one's stride 淡然处之
• make (enormous) strides in 在...取得(巨大)进步
• insurmountable 不可逾越的 (sur- 超越), out of one's control 超出控制

With this will and determination, success is sure to wait for you at the end of the tunnel!
