 If You Were Coming in the Fall

If you were coming in the fall,
I'd brush the summer by
With half a smile and half a spurn,
As housewives do a fly.
If I could see you in a year,
I'd wind the months in balls —
And put them each in separate drawers,
Until their time befalls —
If only centuries delayed,
I'd count them on my hand —
Subtracting till my fingers dropped
Into Van Diemen's land.
If certain, when this life was out —
That yours and mine should be —
I'd toss it yonder like a rind —
And taste eternity —
But now, all ignorant of the length
Of time's uncertain wing —
It goads me, like the goblin bee —
That will not state its sting. 

 

 这首诗写于狄金森的家人奔赴战场期间，全诗共分为5小节，表达了诗人对爱人的相思之情。
第一节讲述了假如诗人只需等待所爱之人一个季节，那么她就能开心地过完这个夏天。
第二节讲述了如果诗人需要等待一年，她就会用月份来计算，以减少相思之苦。
第三节开始，诗人试图让自己显得不在意时间，即使过了几个世纪，她也能接受。
第四节，诗人道出自己心中的猜测：也许爱人已战死，他们再也不能相见，那么生命就不再有任何意义。
第五节描写了诗人的内心情感，等待爱人归来的焦虑心情仿佛是被蜜蜂的毒刺蜇了。
