Good morning/evening, ladies and gentlemen, today my topic is
If you have a dream, go for it right now!First of all, I’d like to tell you a story.
Tom and Tim are brothers. One day after a long trip, they returned to their city. Unfortunately, when they went into the department building, they found the elevator out of service because of power failure. They nearly wanted to cry, for they live on the 80th floor!
They decided to go on foot. They encouraged each other, told jokes, and sang songs. But when they got to the 20th floor, they became tired. So they dropped their bags, thinking that they could fetch the bags when electricity supply is restored.
They kept moving on, this time, more easily. But their happiness soon turned into tiredness when they arrived at the 40th floor. “Why didn’t you pay attention to the notice? It’s your fault!” the elder brother said. “Be reasonable! You are to blame!” the younger argued.
They kept complaining all their way, until they reached the 60th floor when they didn’t have any strength to complain. “Well, stop arguing, okay?” one of them said. “Agreed.” The other replied. They climbed in silence, without a single word. Finally, they reached the destination—the 80th floor. They laughed and laughed. It seemed that they had forgotten their tiredness. However, they finally realized a terrible fact—the key, the only key to the door, had been left on the 20th floor, in one of their bags.
In fact, we are Toms and Tims. Before 20, we all live in the shade of our family, our teachers. We feel that we are under too much pressure, but at the same time, we are not capable or mature. So we totter along the road. After 20, we leave our family, our teachers and begin to fly without burden. After a short period of happy hours, we have a new family, we have our husband or wife, our children, we begin to realize we are no longer young, so a sense of frustration attacks us. We learn to complain, to drudge, and to regret. After two tiring decades, we are 60. We suddenly find that there’s not much time left and we begin to treasure our journey. Only when we reach the end of our life can we realize that our dreams, once so beautiful and fresh, have been dropped when we are 20.
My dear fellows, we are now 17 or 18, and it’s high time to go for our dream. 45 years ago, Martin Luther King had a dream of an America where men and women would be judged not on the color of their skin, but on the content of their character, he had been fighting for it ever since it formed. And now the dream is being turned into a reality. What if he had dropped his dream?
My dear fellows come on. We are stepping into our twenties, we are young, and we have dreams. Our dreams are not a vision of a distant millennium, they are what we can get with our effort. Don’t drop your dreams when you are young. And if you have a dream, go for it RIGHT NOW!
