Study: Working With Too Many Men Is Bad for Your Health

Women who work in male-dominated fields are used to being underestimated, but a new study from Indiana University Bloomington shows that being around a high percentage of men in the workplace can be as taxing to your health as it is to your eye-rolling muscles.

Researchers studied the hormonal patterns of 440 women and determined that those who hold jobs where the workforce is more than 85 percent male had less healthy patterns of cortisol, a hormone linked to social stress. Irregular fluctuations in cortisol can trigger or worsen depression and insomnia, putting women in fields like engineering and construction at higher risk for these conditions.
