Differential geometry defines concepts like tangents, curvature and normals, that allow to talk about local properties of shapes. Beautiful results such as the Gauss-Bonnet theorem tie global shape properties (e.g. topology) to local differential quantities. The smooth theory finds analogs in discrete surfaces - triangle meshes, and allows us to model shapes.
