South Korea will become the first country to commercially launch
fifth-generation (5G) services on Friday as it rolls out the latest
wireless technology with Samsung Electronics' new 5G-enabled smartphone
Galaxy S10.
韩国将于5日正式推出5G商用服务，从而成为全球第一个推出5G商用服务的国家。该国的5G网络将支持三星电子新推出的5G智能手机Galaxy S10。
With one of the world's top smartphone penetration rates, South Korea
is in a race with China, the US and Japan to market 5G, hoping the
technology will spur breakthrough in fields such as smart cities and
autonomous cars, and drive up its economic growth that slowed to a
six-year low in 2018.

"It is meaningful that South Korean telecom companies are providing
services and networks meeting South Korean customers' high standard in
speed and picture quality," Ryu Young-sang, executive vice-president at
the country's top mobile carrier SK Telecom, said on Wednesday.

5G will change the landscape of the gaming industry as it allows
games streamed with minimal delay to be played on smartphones, Ryu
added.

The technology can offer 20-times faster data speeds than 4G networks
and better support for artificial intelligence and virtual reality with
low latency.

The world's richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and his wife MacKenzie have agreed a record-breaking divorce settlement of at least $35bn.

Ms Bezos keeps a 4% stake in the online retail giant, worth $35.6bn on its own.

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos in Seattle in 1994, a year after the couple married, and Ms Bezos was one of its first employees.

Both parties tweeted positive comments about the other in the wake of the announced settlement.

Ms Bezos' tweet is her first and only one since joining the microblogging website this month. In it she stated that she was "grateful to have finished the process of dissolving my marriage to Jeff with support from each other".

Prior to the settlement, Mr Bezos held a 16.3% stake in Amazon. He will retain 75% of that holding but Ms Bezos has transferred all of her voting rights to her former husband.

She will also give up her interests in the Washington Post newspaper and Mr Bezos' space travel firm Blue Origin.

Amazon is now vast online retail business. Last year, it generated sales of $232.8bn and it has helped Mr Bezos and his family amass a fortune of $131bn, according to Forbes magazine.

Astronomers have taken the first ever image of a black hole, which is located in a distant galaxy.

The black hole is 500 million trillion km away and was photographed by a network of eight telescopes across the world. It was captured by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT).

The announcement was made in simultaneous news conferences in Washington, Brussels, Santiago, Shanghai, Taipei and Tokyo.

Prof Heino Falcke, of Radboud University in the Netherlands, who proposed the experiment, told BBC News that the black hole was found in a galaxy called M87.

"What we see is larger than the size of our entire Solar System," he said.

The image shows an intensely bright "ring of fire", as Prof Falcke describes it, surrounding a perfectly circular dark hole. The bright halo is caused by superheated gas falling into the hole. The light is brighter than all the billions of other stars in the galaxy combined - which is why it can be seen at such distance from Earth.

【小知识：黑洞不是“洞”】
1915年，物理学家爱因斯坦发表广义相对论，提出了一个大胆的假设：宇宙中存在一种引力和密度都无限大的宇宙天体——黑洞。在它周围一定区域内，有个连光线也无法逃离的势力范围，这一势力范围叫作“事件视界（event horizon）”。
在相当长一段时期内，黑洞预言无法证实。这一看不见、摸不着，却长久以来存在于科学家们想象和推算中的神秘天体，究竟是否存在？“但目前，天文学家普遍相信黑洞确实存在于宇宙之中。”中科院上海天文台研究员路如森介绍。

The team’s observations strongly validated the general theory of relativity proposed in 1915 by Einstein, the famed theoretical physicist, to explain the laws of gravity and their relation to other natural forces.

The image matches what theoretical physicists and indeed, Hollywood directors, imagined black holes would look like, according to Dr Ziri Younsi, of University College London - who is part of the EHT collaboration.

"Although they are relatively simple objects, black holes raise some of the most complex questions about the nature of space and time, and ultimately of our existence," he said.

首张黑洞照片背后，中国的贡献很特别
无论是分散在世界各地的发布会分会场，还是发布会上交织的英语、汉语、西班牙语等多种语言，都显示出人类在这次探索太空行动中的团结与合作。
而中国在此项研究中所做的贡献，也让每个中国人与有荣焉。
从六地发布会其中的两场设在中国，到四种直播语言中包括汉语，再到初期人们对中国望远镜是否参与观测的种种猜测，此次“黑洞现身”里的中国元素，很难不被外界关注到。
而拍摄结束后，更漫长的照片冲洗过程中，中国科学家同样没有缺席。
两年多来，中国的天文学家们全身心投入到了项目中，为照片首发做出“重要贡献”。
具体来说，中国对该项目的贡献主要在于提供资金支持、电脑建模以及数据分析等方面。
Chinese scientists were involved in the observation through a telescope in Hawaii. They were also highly involved in follow-up data processing and theoretical analysis, said Shen Zhiqiang, head of the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shanghai Astronomical Observatory and a member of the EHT international team.
中国科学院上海天文台台长沈志强也参与了这一国际合作项目。他说，中国的科学家使用夏威夷的一个望远镜参与了观测，同时也高度参与了随后的数据处理和理论分析。
Shanghai and Taipei were selected as two of the cities to hold news conferences, together with Washington, Brussels, Santiago and Tokyo, a recognition of China's contribution.
