    • Being a volunteer is great!
There are lots of volunteers around us now. And they don’t do it for money, they do it only for happy or others。As a young student, helping other people is a major commitment。

If I have a chance to join a volunteer club and to be a volunteer who helps others,I will try my best to help others。In my classroom ,I am good at math and science ,I can help my classmates who are in trouble if I am free.In primary school , I can help teach young students paint because I am good for drawing. And I am good at singing,so I can sing songs to cheer up the sick people in the hospital。Also,I can help the old people in the old people's home , I can clean the floor and do chores ,because I think the old people will be very tired and hard if they do the housework by themselves.

Except these,so many things I can do . Not only I feel good about helping others , but also I do something useful . So I think I should study hard to improve my skills  and I will help others in the future

Watch our film about Volunteer Cornwall

The rising cost of fuel has forced a Cornish charity to make an urgent appeal for new recruits.

A number of drivers for Volunteer Cornwall have been forced to give up their involvement, because they can no longer afford the extra fuel costs.

The organisation fears that the VAT increase in the new year may lead others to do the same.

Volunteer Cornwall is an organisation dedicated to developing active and engaged citizens through volunteering.

They have centres in Liskeard, Bodmin, St Austell, Truro and Redruth. They match people who want to volunteer with organisations that need helpers.

The service could be under threat because of fuel prices

Volunteer Cornwall has worked closely with Cornwall Council and public sector partners during the cold winter weather, providing people with 4 x 4 vehicles to offer help throughout the county.

Giving up his time to help others is something that Al Pagan has been doing for many years. He's one of around 250 drivers who make up the transport section of Volunteer Cornwall.

He says: "The jobs I've done in the twelve years I have been down here run into thousands, and that's just one driver."

John White from Grampound Road in mid Cornwall is one of the many to have used the service.

He says: "I recently had surgery on my foot. I was going to the surgery everyday to have my dressings changed. Without the car service I wouldn't have been able to get to the surgery. Public transport is great but it doesn't get you from door to door."

The service could be under threat because of fuel prices. A number of drivers have given up, several have reduced their hours.

Inland Revenue rules effectively limit mileage payments to 40 pence per mile leaving some drivers out of pocket.

Brian Smith is the charity's transport co-ordinator.

He says: "We don't think it's fair that our volunteers should be asked to subsidise something that is helping the community at large.

"Most of our volunteers are not hugely wealthy people. They are themselves making a sacrifice in order to help others.

"They're not expecting to make a profit, but they are expecting to cover their costs, to enable them to provide transport for people where public and private transport isn't an option."

Volunteer Cornwall is now making an urgent appeal for new drivers to come forward so it can continue to get people around the county to vital appointments.

Each nation has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them or listen to their problems. Other young volunteers go and work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair houses, do their shopping and mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to basketball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers. Some cities have a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts. Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Most of these clubs use a lot of high school and college students as volunteers because they are young enough to remember the problems of younger boys and girls. Volunteers believe that some of the happiest people in the world are those who help to bring happiness to others.
