    The SPI (software process improvement) is need for small organizations because a SPI implies a defined software process, an organizational approach, and a strategy for improvement.

    Many small software organizations have struggled to deliver quality software with in time and budget. Generally quality of software is dependent on the quality of software process used in the development of software. The SPI implies that elements of an effective software process can be defined in an effective manner, and an existing organizational approach to software development can be assessed against those elements and finally a meaningful strategy for improvement can be defined.

    An organization can choose a relatively informal approach to SPI, because the SPI framework defines

    • A set of characteristics that must be present if an effective software process is to be achieved.

    • A method for assessing whether those characteristics are present

    • A mechanism for summarizing the results of any assessment

    • A strategy for assisting a software organization in implementing those process characteristics that been found to be weak or missing.

    Problem:

    Assessment is analogous to an annual physical exam. Using a physical exam as a metaphor, describe the SPI assessment activity.

    Answer:

    Assessment helps in determining the quality level of a process. Just like an annual physical exam helps in examining how well the physical activities were carried out throughout, assessment helps in examining how well the software process and its activities have been followed and whether they are sufficient for a good quality product.

    Assessment helps in finding out the strong as well as the weak points in the current software process of an organization. A high-quality process can be viewed as a result of different activities and tasks examined by assessment. The goal of assessment is simply to find if the activities that are performed conform to the best practices or not.

    Other issues to be considered while assessment is performed are whether or not important activities including tasks and actions applied to all the software projects consistently. Consistency is very important as all software teams must adhere to best practices in a process for good quality products. In order to incorporate these in an organization, the management actions and technical activities are first thoroughly understood. These practices should thus be accepted widely by the entire technical and management staff. In order to achieve a consistent, sophisticated and well accepted approach to adhere to best practices, the management should be able to provided resources as needed by the teams.

    • Demanding the right reports and taking an action.

    • Software process improvement is not feasible without investing time, money and effort.

    • Management commitment and support are essential to sustain the investment.

    The CMM stands for ‘Capability Maturity Model’. This is defined to software engineering.

    The CMMI stands for ‘Capability Maturity Model Integration’, this is defined both software engineering and system engineering.

    The both CMMI and CMM are used for software process improvement. But the CMM is superseded by CMMI and The CMMI is using multiple CMM for sort out problems in software improvement.

    Process dimension: The process dimension is a set of processes characterized by statements of process purpose and process outcomes. The process dimension is defined by external PRM (Process Reference Model).

    The process dimension is defines processes, this is divided into the five process types:

    Capability dimension: The capability dimension have framework comprising six PCL (Process Capability Levels) and their associated process attributes. And this output consists of a set of process attributes ratings for each process assessed, and capability level achieved by that process.

    b. Select assessor and assessment team.

    c. Plan the assessment, including processes and organizational unit to be assessed.

    d. Pre-assessment briefing.

    e. Data collection.

    g. Process rating.

    h. Reporting the assessment result.

    The ISO/IEC 15504 is used in both Process improvement and Capability determination.
